Win and in…

When K-State takes the field against Nebraska Saturday in Lincoln, Neb.,  it will arguably be the Wildcats’ biggest game since the 2003 Big 12 Championship. A division title and bowl eligibility both ride on the outcome of the nationally-televised match-up.

Ever heard of that situation? Neither had quarterback Grant Gregory, and he’s been playing at the college level since before some K-State students were even in high school.

It’s hard to believe the Wildcats are even in this situation. By nearly everyone’s standards, K-State wasn’t supposed to amount to anything this year, and after losses to Louisiana-Lafayette and UCLA – as well as a one-point win over Iowa State –  the Wildcats appeared to be on the fast track to the conference cellar.

What a difference a few weeks can make.

KU lost in a “big” upset at Colorado and is currently in dead last. The Jayhawks were supposed to contend for the Big 12 North crown. Iowa State beat Nebraska in Lincoln. The Cyclones were supposed to (maybe) win one conference game. K-State destroyed a favored Texas A&M team, regained bragging rights in the Sunflower Showdown and nearly pulled off a perfect home record for the first time since 1999.

But it all means nothing come Saturday.

The road may not have been pretty and the numbers may not be too dazzling, but the fact of the matter remains. It’s do-or-die time for Bill Snyder and the Wildcats. The odds are heavily in Nebraska’s favor and, by the standards of many, K-State wasn’t supposed to be here anyway, but the Wildcats have been turning heads all season.

Why stop now?
